NCJW NY Section is Helping Kids Put Their Best Foot Forward
For most families, school is just ending, and they are thinking only about enjoying the summer. But thousands of New York City kids who live near the poverty level are already anxiously thinking about the next school year. That’s because their families often lack the means to purchase new clothes and supplies to make their new year a successful one.
We want these kids to have a worry-free summer.
On August 6th, for one very special day, NCJW NY will transform our building in the heart of NYC’s Upper West Side into a full-service department store. On that day, 200 school children will shop for everything they need to face the new school year with pride and excitement – all completely free of charge.
Research has shown that when kids feel prepared for school, their attendance and performance subsequently improve. With a volunteer “personal shopper” to guide them, each child will have the opportunity to choose his or her own BRAND NEW complete ensemble of pants, shirt, socks, underwear and all-important winter coat. A NEW backpack filled with school supplies and a reference book will also be available for their choosing.
