FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 23, 2017, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed extreme dismay at the federal budget proposed by President Donald Trump for FY 2018. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:/p>
“Trump cuts whatever he can, be it health care (Medicaid, the National Institutes of Health), education (Headstart, Pell grants, student loans and direct aid to local schools), nutrition assistance (SNAP, school lunches, Meals on Wheels ), or programs to help people with disabilities, job training, domestic violence programs, anti-discrimination enforcement, and housing assistance. It is difficult to find an area of the budget that helps ordinary hard working American families that is not subject to the budget axe.
“Trump’s priorities are not those of most of the US population. His initiatives will contribute to growing income inequality, poorer health, inadequate education, more people in substandard housing, and more people who are hungry, among other ills.
“Congress must rally to defeat this egregious proposal and protect women, children, and families from the devastating cuts it contains. NCJW will be working hard to ensure that this budget as submitted will never reach the president’s desk.”
