FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 26, 2017, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today reacted with outrage to President Trump’s tweets disparaging transgender service members and announcing that the military would no longer allow transgender individuals to serve. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“The president’s tweets announcing a policy of state-sanctioned discrimination against transgender individuals marked a new level of intolerance in personally targeting transgender individuals. His tweets feed bigotry and hate and show utter disregard for the very values that members of our military are sworn to uphold.
“One year ago, the Department of Defense ended the ban on open transgender service based on extensive study and debate, only to have the Trump administration delay implementation by six months to December 2017. Nevertheless, protection of LGBTQ individuals in the armed forces was upheld by the House of Representatives a mere two weeks ago. The president’s intervention in this process is unwarranted and pernicious. NCJW will work to overturn this affront to the honor of the thousands of transgender soldiers who already serve in the military and this attack on the civil rights of LGBTQ individuals.”
