Trump Proposals to Erase Trans People Evoke a Dark Past
October 22, 2018, Washington, DC — The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed its extreme alarm at proposals now circulating in the Trump Administration to define sex as biological and unchangeable. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“The administration’s plans to define gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth is nothing short of the attempted erasure of transgender individuals, defying both science and morality. Regulations under consideration by the Trump administration that would reverse court decisions protecting transgender individuals from discrimination in health programs and education would be the first to give this new definition the force of law. The legal ramifications of any effort by the federal government to enforce such a policy would affect the far corners of civil rights law. The mechanisms that would be required to enforce sex classification defy the imagination and are reminiscent of systems the US fought hard to defeat.
“This is an effort that should be immediately abandoned.”
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action.
