FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Trump Administration Implements a Cruel and Illegal Asylum Ban
November 9, 2018, Washington, DC – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a new rule that will further restrict asylum seekers in their quest to seek safety and protection within the United States. The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“The rule, signed today, states that adults and families who cross the border without papers will not be eligible for asylum unless they enter at official ports of entry. This rule forces asylum seekers to choose between waiting for weeks at overloaded ports of entry or risking near-immediate deportation by entering between them.
“The new rule issued by DHS and DOJ completely contradicts our international commitment to protect those seeking safety within our borders. It recklessly shuts the door on children, parents, and other individuals who are fleeing unspeakable violence and persecution. World War II and the Holocaust should have taught our nation the importance of giving asylum seekers the opportunity to find safety within our borders. The administration’s move to severely limit asylum cruelly turns its back on this legacy.”
