President Biden: Have Faith in the ERA
NCJW Leads 60+ Diverse National Faith-Based and Secular Organizations in Urging President Biden to Publish the Equal Rights Amendment
December 5, 2025
The Honorable Joseph Biden, Jr.
President of the United States
The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Biden:
We, the undersigned over 60 national religious, religiously-affiliated, secular, values-based, and faith-centered organizations and communities, share a commitment to equality and social justice. Through our cherished traditions, we affirm the inherent dignity and equal worth of every individual. In this spirit, we strongly support the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), the ratified 28th amendment to the United States Constitution, that would guarantee equal rights to all people regardless of sex. We urge you to take the historic step of instructing the National Archivist to publish and certify the ERA. This action would stand as one of the most impactful milestones of your presidency and a historic achievement for advancing gender equity.
Publishing the ERA in the Constitution would be a transformative step in strengthening anti-discrimination protections and addressing gender-based disparities. Currently, women in the US earn only 82 cents for every dollar earned by men, with women of color facing even wider wage gaps. The ERA would serve as a powerful tool to combat pregnancy discrimination and pay inequities, challenges that disproportionately impact communities of color.
The ERA would also expand the scope of critical legislation like the Violence Against Women Act, which you championed, bolstering protections against gender-based violence. Additionally, it would safeguard individual bodily autonomy, ensuring access to birth control and reproductive health care. And, the ERA would also enhance protections for the LGBTQ+ community, which continues to face pervasive discrimination. By enshrining the ERA in the Constitution, we would establish stronger legal recourse for combating inequality, guaranteeing that every individual is treated with fairness and dignity under the law — a principle that resonates deeply with the moral values of justice, compassion, and the inherent worth of every person upheld by our many traditions. For our organizations, supporting the ERA reflects a commitment to protecting the vulnerable, uplifting the marginalized, and fostering a society rooted in equity and respect for all.
We are grateful for your career-long dedication to women and families and your administration’s accomplishments to further gender equity. Enshrining the ERA in the Constitution would cement your legacy as a champion for gender equity and stand as one of the most pivotal and enduring actions of your time in public service.
