Join NCJW as we travel to Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma, Alabama to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bloody confrontation at the Pettus Bridge and the march from Selma to Montgomery that followed.
The Selma Jubilee commemorates ‘Bloody Sunday’ which originally occurred on March 7, 1965, when a group of 525 African-American demonstrators crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in Selma, Alabama, demanding the right to vote. The demonstrators were met by more than 50 state troopers, horses, and possemen. When they refused to turn back they were brutally beaten. The attack, which was broadcast on national television, caught the attention of millions of Americans and became a symbol of the brutal racism of the South. Two weeks later, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and 3,200 civil rights protestors marched the 49 miles from Selma to Montgomery – an event that prompted Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act.
The 60th Anniversary of Selma Experience will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, learn about the rich history of Jewish life in the South, touch base with partners in the civil rights and democracy space, hear from important speakers, and learn the stories of resilience and relationship that led to one of the most influential Civil Rights moments of our time.
This trip is an extraordinary opportunity for relationship building through visiting historic Civil Rights sites, weaving in Jewish practices and prayer, and listening to stories from those who are playing pivotal roles in continuing the legacy of those who crossed the Pettus Bridge in Selma 60 years ago.
