You Be the Judge Program Introduction
Host a You Be the Judge™ Program!
You Be the Judge is the National Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) unique program designed to provide an interactive (and fun) way for groups to learn about the federal judiciary —the courts and the judicial nominations process —through an in-person or online session. In small groups, participants who are provided with background material on a real federal constitutional rights case put themselves in the judges’ shoes and work together to decide the case. A “reveal” is provided afterward so that they can learn and understand the actual decision. This exercise helps show not only the importance of the judges who sit in lifetime seats on the federal bench, but how each judge brings to their deliberations not only knowledge of the law, but personal views informed by their life’s experience.
NCJW provides a scripted PowerPoint with background on the federal courts and judicial nominations process; a case study, facilitator’s guide, glossary, and reveal; tips for planning and presenting; and a sample agenda. This flexible program can be presented in a virtual format, over a meal with a speaker or a panel of experts, and/or in one hour. You Be the Judge is a trademarked program of BenchMark: NCJW’s Judicial Nominations Campaign. For more than two decades, NCJW has been a leading voice in the progressive community’s fight to ensure a fair and independent judiciary. The composition of the federal courts defines how justice is delivered in our nation. This program is the perfect way for any group —regardless of age or knowledge —to experience and truly understand our courts’ importance and the judges who serve in lifetime seats on those courts.
