Kavanaugh Hearings Conceal Much, Reveal Little
September 7, 2018, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed its extreme dissatisfaction with the conduct of the hearings on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and with the obfuscation of the nominee. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“The hearings on Judge Kavanaugh are fatally tainted by the refusal of the majority to establish a bipartisan policy of handling the reams of material that documents Judge Kavanaugh’s career as a partisan operative in the White House of George W. Bush. A vast majority of the documents that would reveal his views on matters of great importance have been withheld from the Senate Judiciary Committee members and, perhaps more importantly, from the general public.
“Those materials that did make their way into the public record — only at the insistence of the minority on the committee — further deepened our concern about Kavanaugh’s views on women’s reproductive freedom and access to abortion. It is in no way credible for anyone who says they support women’s reproductive rights or access to healthcare to also support Kavanaugh.
“Kavanaugh failed to allay fears about his radical and extreme views and about what he would do if confirmed. Most critically, he showed us that he is not trustworthy. He doubled down on misleading statements, and at best misled and at worst perjured himself at several times throughout the hearing. Overall, Brett Kavanaugh confirmed our worst fears.
“NCJW’s grassroots and grassroots activism across the country has made a difference in helping shed light on this dangerous nominee. And together with the power of so many across the country who oppose this historically unpopular nominee, we urge the Senate to heed the cry of the people and reject Kavanaugh for a lifetime seat on the highest court of the land.”
