Confirmation of Eric Dreiband to Key Civil Rights Post Undermines Justice
October 13, 2018, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) expressed its strongest opposition to the confirmation today of Eric Dreiband to become Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Department of Justice. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:
“Eric Dreiband is absolutely the wrong person to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. He has a record of hostility to civil rights and lacks experience in many of the issues that typically preoccupy the division. Like other appointees of President Trump, he has a built a career of opposition to the mission of the department he seeks to serve.
“The Civil Rights Division should be a bulwark in defending the civil rights of protected classes and historically marginalized people. Eric Dreiband will undermine that role and seek to weaken our nation’s commitment to enforcing iconic civil rights legislation that the National Council of Women and many other organizations worked so hard to enact and defend over the years.”
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
